As a mother, nothing prepares you for the emotional and physical challenges that come with a serious illness. I never imagined that right after welcoming my beautiful son into the world, I would also be diagnosed with cancer. The fear and uncertainty I felt as a mum navigating treatments, surgeries, and hospital visits were overwhelming. But through it all, one thing remained certain: There is always love.
When I looked at my children, I knew I needed to find a way to help them understand what was happening to me. I wanted them to know that, despite changing things, my love for them would never waver. But finding the right words to explain my illness to a newborn and an 18-month-old was a struggle. It felt like a heavy burden that I couldn't carry alone, and that’s when the idea for There Is Always Love was born.
This book is my gift to families facing tough times. It’s a story for children who are trying to make sense of the big, often scary changes in their lives. Whether those changes come in the form of illness, family separation, or other challenging experiences. Through simple, loving words, the There Is Always Love series helps children understand that even when things feel uncertain, the love from their parents and caregivers is constant and unbreakable.
I’ve written this book with the hope that it can be a source of comfort, a tool for parents to open up conversations about illness with their children. And while the story centres on a mother’s journey through cancer, it’s just the beginning. This book is part of a larger series that will explore other difficult topics like grief, anxiety, and separation — all through the eyes of young children, with the reassuring message that no matter what, there is always love.
I want every child who reads There Is Always Love to feel safe, loved, and understood, to know that the love of their parents will always be a steady force in their lives, no matter the challenges they may face. This is a book that is as much for parents as it is for children, because when we share our love with them, we build the foundation for a world where even the hardest times can be faced together.
Thank you for reading my story, and I hope that There Is Always Love can bring comfort and peace to your family as it has to mine.
